PERSONALITY
Overkill wasn't always the no-nonsense, callous and brutal asshole he is these days. Once upon a time he was nicer, kinder, a wide-eyed kid who just wanted to Help and Do the Right Thing. Make the world a better place for everybody and fight Evil. But after the Terror wiped out his team, and his hero, he started seeing things in darker shades. The experience hardened him, made him realize that sometimes just wanting to do what's right and going about it the Right Way isn't enough. That Evil doesn't take lunch breaks or vacations, or sleep, so if you want to wipe out evil you need to meet it on its level.

Since the Incident, and after several years of working for AEGIS, Overkill has molded himself into a hardened killer, the kind of guy who will do whatever he has to in order to accomplish his mission, putting him at odds with Good Guys and Bad Guys alike. He's brutal in methods and terse in interactions, responding to most interactions with either excessive violence or a lot of cursing and blunt phrasing, preferring to get to the point quickly no matter what it is he's doing.

This extends as much to interpersonal relationships as anything else; his only friend is his base of operations/sidekick Dangerboat, who is literally an AI housed in an armor-plated boat. Anybody new is seen as a potential liability or enemy first and an ally second, and even allies he has a hard time admitting as such; allies can be a liability, after all, and can be lost entirely, so better not to make friends. At least if Dangerboat gets destroyed he can just make a new one. Probably. Actual people can't be replaced, and if they don't need replacing they run the risk of stabbing you in the back; you don't run around shouting at people not to touch you if you don't have a few hang-ups about trust, after all.

That's not to say he's completely forgotten how to be human, of course; he's got a code that dictates how he operates in the world, one that requires life-debts for sacrifice on his behalf and loyalty for compassion or help. He allies himself with Arthur at first because of a common goal, but remains an ally even after he's outlived his usefulness because he can see Arthur is legitimately a good person in over his head, and that's what pulls him out of his vengeance-shell, because he can recognize his younger self in it. He repeatedly helps Arthur and Dot even when it seems to put himself at risk and not be aligned with his vengeance quest, because it goes against his code to leave them unprotected, even while he growls to everyone around him that he doesn't need friends and having people to care about is a risk.

At the end of the day, Overkill generally comes across as an emotionally stunted teenager who managed to find a cool looking paintball suit and runs around taking out his Issues on everyone around him. He hits, shoots, or stabs any obstacle in his way and actively tries to alienate the few people who still want to hang around him anyway (for some reason) because if there's nobody close to him he doesn't have to talk about his Feelings and he can pretend he's Totally Completely Fine.

HISTORY
Overkill started out as a much milder, more reasonable vigilante, a kid with high hopes who was a sidekick to one of the best in the business and just wanted to Do the Right Thing. Make the world better. Help people and stop the bad guys. That is, right up until his hero and most of the rest of the team were brutally murdered at the hands of the Terror, and after that things got a little darker.

Traumatized by the experience, and reeling from the loss of his vision and hands in the process, he went back to work for the government, who gave him cybernetic implants for his eyes and cybernetic hands to match. He took a much more brutal approach after that, his methods growing more and more extreme until they finally let him go, deciding he was too big a liability. Since then he's been doing his damnedest trying to track down the Terror, who he's convinced is still alive, and wipe out as much of the criminal element in the City as possible, no matter what.
